Before you tackle setting up your new iPhone I would recommend making sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your PC or Mac. This can be done through the update facility in iTunes itself.
Once you connect your iPhone 4 you should be given instructions on how to register the device with Apple. After this you will then be able to synchronise your iTunes library, podcasts, photos, bookmarks, contacts and calendar with your new iPhone 4.
After the initial sync, which could take anything up to an hour if you have a lot of data, you are then able to choose if you want to sync your iPhone with your computer whenever you plug it in. Manual syncing can be chosen if so desired. If you change your mind, these options can be changed later using the status screen in iTunes.
